Located in Manhattan on the New York City Subway’s No. 1 line, the 168th Street and 181st Street stations underwent partial restorations. In 2009, at 103 years old, the brick ceiling of the 181st St. station partially collapsed onto the track. Emergency scaffolding and support systems were installed and capital funding was secured to renovate the station and its sister station at 168th St. The extensive masonry restoration project included removal of the face brick of the ceiling and installation of new glass-fiber reinforced concrete panels, as well as bringing the stations up to current code while maintaining their historic identity. Project management included full time construction administration in addition to conditions assessments, laboratory materials testing, in-situ materials testing, treatment recommendations and procedures. JBC also reviewed all submittals for masonry, GFRC, overall cleaning and restoration, and intensive site supervision.
