Documentation & Planning

Documentation is a fundamental first step in historic preservation work.

JBC provides complete Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) documentation including measured drawings and photography meeting the high level of thoroughness required by HABS standards. We also perform historical research, utilizing our own collections of historical literature and materials as well as our access to archives and other resources throughout the country. We can use this information to prepare historic structure reports (HSRs), cultural landscape report (CLRs), and cultural resource surveys that meet National Park Service and State Historic Preservation Office standards.

For resource located underground, such as cemeteries, JBC has experience performing sub-surface surveys using ground penetrating radar (GPR). Read more about how we used GPR to identify 500 unmarked graves in an early African American cemetery.
