Terra Cotta

Stoeckel Hall, housing part of the School of Music at Yale University, underwent extensive rehabilitation. JBC performed an initial conditions assessment of the 1897 brick and terra cotta façade that found severe deterioration of the terra cotta. We continued with the project through probes, terra cotta repair design, and construction supervision of the terra cotta salvage, repair, fabrication, and reinstallation. The building is a jewel box ornamented with highly ornate terra cotta units that are also quite large. Working with all parties, JBC ensured that the ornamentation of the building was faithfully preserved as large areas of the façade were dismantled to repair failing structural steel supports. We oversaw the custom production of more than 500 pieces of terra cotta to replace severely damaged units.

Project Scope

• Comprehensive investigation of the façade that found major deterioration.

• Thorough survey and documentation of the types and locations of deterioration.

• Probes to determine how the terra cotta was fastened to the building and how to dismantle it.

• Evaluation of all repair options including terra cotta replacement with alternative materials.

• Worked with team on estimating and value engineering.

• Design of terra cotta repairs.

• Development of a labeling system to ensure all the restored and new pieces were reinstalled in their correct locations.

• Review of all submittals and shop drawings.

• Supervision of terra cotta manufacturing, including visits to the manufacturing plant to review all molds of replica units and inspect completed units before shipping.

• Construction administration.
