Chambers Street Station

Chambers Street Station (BMT), servicing the New York City Subway’s J and Z lines, underwent a modernization project to install elevators and improve accessibility to customers with disabilities. The station was built in coordination with the Municipal Building directly above and opened to passenger service in 1913. Chambers Street Station retains many of its original finishes at the mezzanine level and its distinctive tiled columns supporting a double-height ceiling at the platform level. The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

JBC worked with MLJ Contracting to ensure the historic interior was protected and that all new work was orchestrated sympathetically with the existing historic fabric. JBC oversaw the salvage and reinstallation of historic finishes that were removed to accommodate new elevators, ramps, and stairs, and worked with manufacturers to develop custom mosaic and ceramic tiles that are nearly indistinguishable from the originals. Expert supervision from JBC’s conservators ensured that the installation of finishes was executed to the highest standards.
